बालकांड
चतुर्विंशस्सर्गः

देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा भगवान् वै पितामहः ।
प्रत्युवाच सुसंत्रस्तान् कृतांत बलमोहितान् ॥

स॥ सुसंत्रस्तान् कृतांत बलमोहितान् देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा भगवान् वै पितामहः प्रत्युवाच ।

'Hearing those words of Devas who were greatly alarmed and were confounded by fear , Brahma the Lord of creation spoke as follows'.

य स्येयं वसुधा कृत्स्ना वासुदेवस्य धीमतः ।
कापिलं रूप मास्थाय धारयत्यनिशं धराम् ॥
तस्य कोपाग्निना दग्धा भविष्यंति नृपात्मजाः ॥।

स॥ यस्य इयं वसुधा कृत्स्ना (स) वसुदेवस्य धीमतः कापिलं रूपं आस्थाय अनिशाम् धरां धारयति । स नृपात्मजाः तस्य कोपाग्निना धग्दा भविष्यंति ।

"Vasudeva who is the protector of the whole world is carrying the burden of this earth having taken the form of Kapila Maharshi . The sons of that king Sagara will die in the fire of anger of that great soul."

पृथिव्याश्चापि निर्भेधो दृष्ट एव सनातनः ।
सगरस्य च पुत्राणां विनाशोsदीर्घजीविनाम् ॥

स॥पृथिव्याश्च निर्भेदः अपि , अदीर्घजीविनां सगरस्य पुत्राणां विनाशः अपि सनातनः दृष्ट एव ।

"The instance of the earth being dug up and the destruction of sons of Sagara with limited life has already been foretold"

पितामह वचः श्रुत्वा त्रयस्त्रिंश दरिंदम ।
देवाः परम संहृष्टाः पुनर्जग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥

स॥ त्रयस्त्रिंशद् अरिंदमः देवाः पितामहस्य वचः श्रुत्वा यथागतं (तथा) पुनर्जग्मुः ।

'Hearing those words of the creator the thirty three Devas again went back in the same way they have come.'

सगरस्य च पुत्राणां प्रादुरासीन् महत्मनाम् ।
पृथिव्यां भिद्यमानायां निर्घात समनिस्वनः॥

स॥ पृथिव्यां भिद्यमानायां महात्मनां , सगरस्य च पुत्राणां निर्घात समनिस्वनः प्रादुरासीत् ।

'The all powerful sons of Sagara who were digging up the earth came across a stunning sound".

ततो भित्त्वा महीं सर्वे कृत्वाचापि प्रदक्षिणम् ।
सहिता सागरा स्सर्वे पितरं वाक्यमब्रुवन् ॥

स॥ ततः महीं भित्त्वा सर्वे चापि प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा सर्वे सागरा सहिता पितरं वाक्यमब्रुवन् ।

'Then the sons of Sagara who went around the world digging up the earth told their father as follows'.

परिक्रांता मही सर्वा सत्त्ववंतश्च सूदिताः ।
देवदानव रक्षांसि पिशाचोरग किन्नराः ॥
न च पश्यामहे अश्वं तं अश्वहर्तारं एव च ।
किं करिष्याम भद्रं ते बुद्धिरत्र विचार्यताम् ॥

स॥ मही सर्वा परिक्रांता , देवदानव , रक्षांसि , पिशाचोरग किन्नराः सत्त्ववंतश्च सर्वा सूदिताः। ( वयं) अश्वं न पश्यामहे , तं अश्वहर्तारं एव च ( न पश्यामहे) . किं करिष्याम . अत्र बुद्धिः विचार्यताम्. ते भद्रम् ( अस्तु).

" Oh Father! We searched all over the earth . We destroyed the Devas, Rakshasas, Pisacha's, Naga's, kinnara's and other living beings. We could not find neither the sacrificial horse nor the one who stole that horse. You should think about what we should be doing. May you be safe ".

तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पुत्त्राणां राजसत्तमः ।
समन्युरब्रवीद्वाक्यं सगरो रघुनंदन ॥

स॥ (हे) रघुनंदन ! तत् वचनं श्रुत्वा राजसत्तमः समन्युः सगरो पुत्राणां वाक्यं अब्रवीत् ।

' Oh Raghunandana ! Sagara the best of kings , having heard their words and thinking of the same spoke to his sons'.

भूयः खनत भद्रं वो निर्भिध्य वसुधातलम् ।
अश्वहर्तार मासाद्य कृतार्थाश्च विवर्तथ ॥

स॥ भूयः खनत । भद्रं वो । वसुधातलम् निर्भिध्य अश्व हर्तारं आसाद्य च कृतार्थाः विवर्तथ ।

"You may dig again. May you be successful. Dig up the whole earth capture the one who stole the sacrificial horse and having succeeded return home".

पितुर्वचनमासाद्य सगरस्य महात्मनः ।
षष्टिः पुत्त्रसहस्राणि रसातल मभिद्रवन् ॥

स॥ महात्मनः सगरस्य षष्टि सहस्राणि पुत्त्रः पितुः वचनं आसाद्य रसातलं अभिद्रवन् ।

Those all powerful sixty thousand sons of Sagara having heard their father's words went on digging reaching the nether world.

खन्यमाने ततस्मिन् ददृशुः पर्वतोपमम् ।
दिशागजं विरूपाक्षं धारयंतं महीतलम् ॥

स॥ ततः खन्यमाने ( ते) परवतोपमं , महीतलं धारयंतं , दिशागजं , विरूपाक्षं तस्मिन् ददृशुः ।

The sons of Sagara who were digging thus , saw a great elephant by name Virupaksha.

सपर्वतवनां कृत्स्नां पृथिवीं रघुनंदन ।
शिरसा धारयामास विरूपाक्षो महागजः ॥
यथा पर्वणि काकुत् स्थ विश्रमार्थं महागजः ।
खेदाच्छालयते शीर्षं भूमिकंपस्तदा भवेत् ॥

स॥ (हे) रघुनंदन ! विरूपाक्षो महागजः सपर्वत वनां कृत्सानां पृथिवीं शिरसा धारयामास ।(हे) काकुत्स्था ! यथा (स) महागजः पर्वणि विश्रमार्थं शीर्षं खेदाच्चालयते तदा भूमिकंपः भवेत् ।

' Oh Raghunandana ! That great elephant by name Virupaksha was carrrying the earth with all its forests and mountains.Oh Rama ! on special days when the the great elephant moved its head for resting the same, the whole earth shaked"

तं ते प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा दिशापालं महागजम् ।
मानयं तो हि ते राम जग्मुर्भित्यारसातलम् ॥
ततः पूर्वां दिशं भित्वा दक्षिणं भिभिदुः पुनः ।
दक्षिणस्यामपि दिशि ददृशुस्ते महागजम् ॥
महापद्मं महात्मानं सुमहत् पर्वतोपमम् ।
शिरसा धारयंतं ते विस्मयं जग्मुरुत्तमम् ॥

स॥ (हे) राम ! ते तं महागजं प्रदक्षिणी कृत्वा रसातलं आनयंतो हि दिशापालं जग्मुः । ततः पूर्वां दिशं भित्वा , दक्षिणं पुनः बिभिदुः । दिशि दक्षिणस्यां अपि ते महागजं ददृशुः ।शिरसा धारयंतं सुमहत् पर्वतोपमम् महात्मानं महापद्मं ( दृष्ट्वा) ते उत्तमं विस्मयं जग्मुः ।

' Oh Rama ! They cirumbulated the great elephant , and then they went on digging towards the nether world. They dug towards east , they then dug up the earth in the southern direction. In the southern direction also they saw a great elephant. Seeing the poweful and great elephant by name Mahapadmam , which is equal in size to a mountain, they were all wonder struck'.

ततः प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा सगरस्य महात्मनः ।
षष्टिः पुत्त्रसहस्राणि पश्चिमां भिभिदुर्दिशम् ॥

स॥ ततः सगरस्य षष्टिः पुत्त्रसहस्राणि महात्मनः (तं) प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा पश्चिमां दिशं भिभिदुः ।

'The powerful sixty thousand sons of Sagar, then circumbulated that great elephant and started digging in the westerly direction'.

पश्चिमायामपि दिशि महांत मचलोपमम् ।
दिशागजं सौमनसं ददृशुस्ते महाबलाः ॥

स॥ ते महबलाः दिशि पश्चिमायां अपि महंतं अचलोपमम् सौमनसं दिशागजं ददृशुः ।

'Then those powerful ones saw the great elephant by name Saumanasa which is equal in size to that of a mountain'.

तं ते प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा पृष्ट्वा चापि निरामयम् ।
खनंत स्समुपक्रांता दिशं हैमवतीं ततः ॥

स॥ ते तम् प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा निरामयं पृष्ठ्वा अपि ततः हैमवतीं दिशं खनंतः समुपक्रांता ।

'They circumbulated her , enquired after her welfare and then started digging the direction of north'.

उत्तरश्यां रघुश्रेष्ठ ददृशुर्हिमपांडरम् ।
भद्रं भद्रेण वपुषा धारयंतं महीमिमाम् ॥

स॥ (हे ) रघु श्रेष्ठ ! उत्तरस्यां ( दिशि) इमाम् महीं वपुषां भद्रं भद्रेण धारयंतं हिम पाण्डुरं ददृशुः ।

'Oh Best of Raghus ! In the northern direction too they saw an elephant , white like snow , bearing the burden of earth in a careful manner.'

समालभ्य ततः सर्वे कृत्वा चैनं प्रदक्षिणम् ।
षष्टिः पुत्त्र सहस्राणि भिभिदु र्वसुधातलम् ।

स॥ एनं सर्वे समालभ्य प्रदक्षिणं च कृत्वा षष्टिः पुत्त्र सहस्राणि वसुधातलं भिभिदु ।

'They then touched the same and having circumbulated they again continued digging up the earth'.

ततः प्रागुत्तरां गत्वा सागराः प्रथितां दिशम् ।
रोषादभ्यखनन् सर्वे पृथिवीं सगरात्मजाः ॥

स॥ ततः सर्वे सगरात्मजाः रोषात् प्रधितां प्रागुत्तरां दिशम् गत्वा अभ्यखनन् ।

'The sons of Sagara full of anger then started to dig in the well known northeasterly direction'.

ते तु सर्वे महात्मानो भीमवेगा महाबलाः ।
ददृशुः कपिलं तत्र वासुदेवं सनातनम् ॥

स॥ ते सर्वे माहात्मनः भीमवेगाः महबलाः तत्र सनातनम् वासुदेवं कपिलम् ददृशुः ।

'There the all powerful and great ones who are capable of moving at great speeds saw Kapila Maharshi who is an incarnation of SriVishnu'.

हयं च तस्य देवस्य चरंतं अविदूरतः ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं प्राप्ताः सर्वे ते रघुनंदन ।

स॥ हे! रघुनंदन ! तस्य देवस्य अविदूरतः चरंतम् हयं ( दृष्ट्वा) अतुलं प्रहर्षं प्राप्ताः ।

'Oh Raghunandana ! They also saw a horse walking nearby that venerable sage and were happy'.

ते तं हयहरं ज्ञात्वा क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणाः ॥
खनित्र लांगलधरा नानावृक्षशिलाधराः ।
अभ्यधावंत संक्रुद्धाः तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रुवन् ॥

स॥ ते तं हयहरं ज्ञात्वा क्रोथ पर्याकुलेक्षणः संक्रुद्धाः नानावृक्षशिलाधराः खनित्र लांगलधराः तिष्ठ तिष्ठ इति आब्रुवन् अभ्यधावंत ।

'Then thinking that he is the one who stole the sacrificial horse they became angry . They ran after him with trees stones and other weapons shouting " stop" , "stop"'.

अस्माकं त्वं हि तुरगं यज्ञीयं हृतवानपि ।
दुर्मेधस्त्वं हि संप्राप्तान् विद्धि न स्सगरात्मजान् ॥

स॥ (हे) दुर्मेधः ! अस्माकं यज्ञीयं तुरगं त्वं हि हृतवानपि संप्राप्तवान् ! नः सगरात्मजान् विद्धि !

( They said) " Oh Ill-mannered one ! You have stolen our sacrficial horse and brought the same, Know that we are the sons of Sagara "

श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तेषां कपिलो रघुनंदन ।
रोषेण महताss विष्टो हुंकारमकरोत् तदा ॥
स॥ (हे) रघुनंदन ! तेषां वचनम् श्रुत्वा तदा कपिलः रोषेण महता हूंकारं अकरोत् ।

'Oh Ragunandana ! the Kapila Maharshi having heard their words uttered "Hum" with anger'.

ततस्तेनाप्रमेयेण कपिलेन महात्मना ।
भस्मराशीकृता स्सर्वे काकुत् स्थ सगरात्मजाः ॥

स॥ हे ककुत्स्था ! ततः स महात्मना कपिलेन अप्रमेयेण सर्वे सगरात्मजाः भस्मराशीकृता: ।

' Oh Scion of Kakutstha ! the sons of Sagara were turned into a heap of ashes by that venerable sage Kapila'.

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये बालकांडे चतुर्विंशस्सर्गः ॥
समाप्तं ॥

Thus the fortieth Sarga of Balakanda in the Valmiki Ramayana coems to an end.
